13:30-15:30 Workshop: The Glory of Chakrāsana, Setu Bandhāsana & Backbending
“A deep dive into the spine, neck, and keeping them strong, supple, and safe.”Everyone has that one relative who’s a little... tricky. In the Ashtanga family, Chakrāsana and Setu Bandhāsana often take that role—misunderstood, often skipped, and sometimes even feared. One’s a dynamic vinyāsa, the other a challenging posture, and both raise the question: should we skip them, or learn how to love them?
In this workshop, we’ll explore these two enigmatic poses, why we roll backwards and how this is a practical Vinyāsa preparing one for backbending and more challenging poses like headstand. You’ll explore how Chakrāsana acts as a bridge—literally and metaphorically—to headstands, deeper backbends, and advanced transitions.
We'll also take a closer look at Setu Bandhāsana—its potential to ease neck pain, support spinal health, and even reduce migraines, jaw tension, and throat discomfort. You’ll understand how this posture builds the foundation for sustainable, safe backbending.
Finally, we’ll unpack the art of backbending itself: how to protect the neck, calm the nervous system, and safely drop the head back in a range of asanas woven throughout the Ashtanga series.
Open to all regular practitioners of yoga (all styles).

Sarah Durney Hatcher
Biography:
Sarah has been many of our Mysore Teaching Team's main teacher for over 10 years, with Emma Isokivi assisting and practising with her for over 10 years including when Sarah was in Edinburgh directing the Meadowlark Yoga Mysore programme. She has a very special place in our hearts and community and a big honour to have her teach with us annually.
Sarah grew up in the US in the Reno, Nevada / Lake Tahoe area. After years of competitive ski racing and playing soccer, her mental and physical well-being had had enough. Sarah found yoga as a teenager and began Ashtanga Yoga in 2000, and hasn't stopped since. She has practised with Śri K Pattabhi Jois, Sharath Jois, and spent her earliest years of practice with Nancy Gilgoff and Christine Hoar. Her present teachers, David Garrigues and Dena Kingsberg have taught her the practice through Advanced B. Sarah studies Sanskrit chanting with her teacher David Miliotis and teaches a weekly chanting class online.
Sarah teaches workshops and retreats around Europe as well as runs a small Mysore programme in Dublin, where she lives with her two sons Dashiel and Calvin. When she isn't on the mat she is climbing indoors and outside, running after her boys, and planning their next outdoor adventure.
